Students leaving Arkhangelsk on the "Professor Molchanov".

For the third year in a row, students from the Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU) in Arkhangelsk have the chance to get hands-on experience on Arctic research. The research vessel “Professor Molchanov” left Arkhangelsk on Sunday, bound for a 30 days cruise to Svalbard and the Barents Sea.

Location

On board the vessel are 30 students from NArFU and the Lomonosov University in Moscow. They will be given courses in ecology, hydro chemistry, oceanology and hydrometeorology by scientists from several leading research institutes and take part in practical scientific research. The students will be spending ten days doing research on Svalbard, the university says in a press release.

The «Arctic Floating University» is a joint project between NArFU, the Russian Geographical Society, the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, the Hydrometeorological Service and other institutions. The annual expeditions have become one of the priority projects of the Russian Geographical Society, which is headed by Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu and where President Vladimir Putin is Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
