Murmansk teams up with the Russian Geographical Society in major Arctic expedition.

The northwest Russian region will be a key stakeholder in this year’s main Russian Arctic expedition.

Location

The flag of Murmansk region will wave on the North Pole point as part of the “Arctic-2015” expedition, a major endeavor organized together with the Russian Geographical Society, the two chambers of the Russian parliament and others. Murmansk is this year a full-fledged participant in the project, a press release from the regional government reads.

The participation can  be seen as the start of a new level of interaction between the Murmansk regional government and the Geographical Society, Governor Marina Kovtun’s office says.

The regional flag made by specially solid textiles, was this week handed over to representatives of the Society.

The Russian Geographical Society has the past 15 years annually organized the Barneo expeditions. Based on icefloes, the expedition camp drifts across major parts of the Arctic ocean before the ice gradually dissolves and the camp members pack up things.
