Rush for Arctic knowledge
Norway’s University of Tromsø and the University Center in Svalbard have both record numbers of applicants.
“The University of Tromsø strengthens its position as an attractive university for young talents from all over the country”, says President Jarle Aarbakke to Nordlys. “The high number of applicants to courses that are relevant for the High North shows that people from all over Norway are starting to realize what opportunities lay in the north”.
UiT´s key research focuses on the polar environment, indigenous people, peace and conflict transformation, telemedicine, medical biology, space physics, fishery science, linguistics and computational chemistry.
The University Center in Svalbard (UNIS) is the world's northernmost institution for higher education and research and attracts students looking for Arctic competence. This year 628 students have applied for courses here, which is 200 more than only four years ago, Svalbardposten writes.
UNIS offers courses in biology, technology, geology and geophysics.
