Road construction, airport development and high-speed Internet connection are our main priorities, Nenets Governor Igor Fyodorov’s says to Prime Minister Medvedev.

Location

Our most important and significant issue is the construction of the road between Naryan-Mar and Usinsk, Fyodorov highlighted in his meeting with Premier Dmitry Medvedev last week. As previously reported, the Nenets Autonomous Okrug has today no road connection to the neighboring regions and all transport to and from the regional capital of Naryan-Mar goes either by plane or sea.  The construction of the 386 km long to Usinsk in the Komi Republic road was started already in 1991 but soon halted as funding dried out. About 80 km of the road remains to be built.

Secondly, the governor called on the federal government to help develop civilian air traffic in the region, and proposed to include all of the region’s 17 airports and helicopter pads in a joint structure, the state-controlled Amderma Airport Company, a press release reads.

“This will facilitate centralized solutions to issues of modernization and development of the Nenets airport structure, and secure access and security to air transportation in the Russian Arctic”, the governor underlined.

Thirdly, Fyodorov wants the federal authorities to support the laying of a fiber-optic line from Mezen in Arkhangelsk Oblast to Naryan-Mar, a measure which will provide about 12 thousand people in the region with high-speed Internet connection.

The oil-rich Arctic region with a population of about 45 thousand recently won praise from federal authorities as it was declared “the region with the most efficient government”.
