Lapland, Arctic Ocean railway study

Railway station in Rovaniemi

Finland lost its coastline to the Barents Sea in 1944, but could now again gain access to the Arctic via a railway to Norway.

Location

The Norwegian Government has granted one million NOK (€134.000) to the Northern Dimension Partnership on Transport and Logistics. The funding will be spent on studies and analyses on cross-border infrastructure in between Finnish Lapland and northern Norway, reports the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Two railway options are included into the study; one from Kolari to Skibotn, and one from Rovaniemi to Kirkenes.

A new railway line from Finnish Lapland to ice-free harbours in northern Norway is of particular interests for the new mining industry currently under development.

The Northern Dimension Partnership on Transportation and Logistics (NDPTL) was established in October 2009 and the secretariat for the new infrastructure development will be administrated by the Nordic Investment Bank in Helsinki.
