Olympic flame on North Pole voyage

The nuclear powered icebreaker "Rossia" in floating dock in the central harbor of Murmansk.

Torchbearers will embark a nuclear powered icebreaker in Murmansk and bring the Sochi Olympic flame to the top of the globe in October.

Location

Departure from Murmansk towards the North Pole is set for October 15th after the flame first fly in to Moscow from Athens on October 7, reports Vesti’s regional TV news in Sochi.

The torchbearers will leave the icebreaker a few hundred meters from the North Pole and run the last distance on the ice. There, Russian Northern fleet’s navy orchestra will play and the ceremony will be attended by Rosatom, the State Atomic Energy Corporation that operates Russia’s fleet of nuclear powered icebreakers. Participating on the voyage is also Dmitry Chernyshenko, President of the Sochi 2014 organizing committee, reports Portnews.

Back in Murmansk later in October, the flame will continue to the other Barents cities of Arkhangelsk, Petrozavodsk, Syktyvkar and Naryan-Mar, as previously reported by BarentsObserver

The torch will eventually be winding down to the Black Sea resort of Sochi for the Opening Ceremony on February 7, 2014.
