Reactors onboard

The first of the two reactors to Russia's first floating nuclear power plant was lifted onboard on September 27th.

The two reactors for Russia’s first floating nuclear power plant to be used in the Arctic are now installed.

Location

Each of the KLT-40S reactors that were lifted onboard “Akademik Lomonosov” at the Baltisky Zavod this week has a power effect of 35 MWe. A huge crane lifted the first reactor unit onboard on September 27 and the second on October 1, reports Rosenergoatom, Russia’s state nuclear power company.

The reactors are assembled and tested at AtomEnergoProekt in Nizhniy Novgorod before being shipped to the yard outside St. Petersburg. The floating nuclear power plant, named “Akademik Lomonosov” is a huge barge that will finally be towed aout the Baltic Sea and further north around the coast of Norway towards the Northern Sea Route.

Its final homeport will be Pevek on the Chukotka Peninsula in the very east of Siberia’s north coast.

Back in 2007, the keel to the floating nuclear power plant was laid at Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk, but later moved to St. Petersburg. The delivery, with conection to the power grid and start-up of the reactors in Pevek is scheduled for autumn 2016.
