Nenets ports prepare for offshore oil

The sea port of Naryan-Mar will undergo modernization.

The region strikes deal with federal authorities over the development of ports facilities in Indiga and Naryan-Mar. That will prepare the ground for more out-shipments of Arctic oil and gas.

The regional government of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug and the state port development company Rosmorport will cooperate about the development of a new sea port at Indiga, a village by the Pechora Sea coast, as well as about a major upgrade of the Naryan-Mar port.

An agreement on the projects will be signed in the course of the month, a press release from the Nenets administration reads. Also the Nenets Oil Company, an enterprise owned by the regional government, is part of the deal. The parties will cooperate about the projecting of the new infrastructure. They will later also take part in the preparations for the port construction works, the regional government informs.

The Nenets Autonomous Okrug has abundant oil resources on land and is located near several rich oil fields in the Pechora Sea. In December 2013, Gazprom Neft started production at the Prirazlomnoye field and exploration drilling at the nearby Dolginskoye field is taking place this summer.

The Nenets government is strongly lobbying also the development of the Pechora LNG project.  As previously reported, Rosneft has caught interest and is in the process of taking over a major project stake from the Altech company.
