The number of people living under the official poverty border in 2010 decreased by 1,8 percent to 12,9 percent of the population, figures from the Statistical Service in Murmansk show. People making less than 3500 RUB (86 EUR) per month in 2010 amounted to only 1,1 percent of the population, while 2,4 percent of the inhabitants had incomes between 3500 and 5000 RUB, MBnews.ru reports.

In early 2011, the official minimum wage which determines the poverty level was by federal authorities set at about 5900 RUB (145 EUR). For pensioners, the minimum wage is lower, about 4700 RUB (116 EUR).

In Murmansk Oblast, 10,6 percent of the population in 2010 had a monthly income between 7000-10000 RUB, and 18,6 percent had an income between 10000-15000 RUB. The biggest part of the population (27,4%) made a monthly between 15000-25000 RUB.

In the upper half of the scale, 15 percent of the inhabitants earned between 25000 and 35000 RUB, while 19,5 percent earned more than 35000 RUB (860 EUR).

The divergence between the richest ten percent and the poorest ten percent of the population in 2010 amounted to 13,7 times, which is similar to the situation in 2009, MBnews writes.

According to 2011 figures from the Murmansk Statistical Service, the highest salaries in the region are found in the finance sector, followed by shipping, air transport and metallurgy. Textile production, wood processing and education are found in the other end of the scale.
