Russian authorities are making serious efforts to stabilize population figures. Still, the number of Russians continues to drop sharply due mainly to low birth rates and high death rates.
In 2050, the Russian population will total 110,1 million people, the research institute Population Reference Bureau maintains. That is more than the UN estimates which reads that the population will drop to 107 million in 2050, newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports.
In the 2002 census, the number of Russians amounted to 143 millions.
As BarentsObsever reported this week, Russian authorities have decided to postpone next year’s planned census, due to the financial crisis.
