Arkhangelsk replaces newspaper editor

Aleksandr Sakharov resigns as editor of Pravda Severa, the biggest newspaper in Arkhangelsk Oblast. Economic hardship is the reason, he says.

The resignation comes after growing pressure from regional authorities. As BarentsObserver reported last week, unknown individuals believed to be associated with the authorities, have lately acquired a major number of shares in the company. Newspaper staff said last week that Sakharov is likely to be replaced by a new and more loyal editor.

Mr. Sakharov admits in his last edition as editor that the newspaper has been increasingly troubled by economic hardship. Following the situation, the number of weekly editions has been reduced from five to three.

Pravda Severa is the main regional newspaper with about 21000 daily printed issues. It was founded in 1917.
