Six Graney-class submarines to be built

Russian Defence Ministry source reveals the number of new multi-purpose submarines to be built within the next eight years.

Speaking with Russian news agency Itar-Tass, the source said at least six multipurpose nuclear-powered submarines will be built. The first of the new fourth generation Graney-class submarine, to be named Severodvinsk, will be put into service in 2011, as reported by BarentsObserver earlier this week.

The Graney-class submarine will equipped with long-range cruise missiles that can potentially carry low-capacity tactical nuclear warheads.

All submarines of the class will be build at the Sevmash naval yard in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast.
