Russia might soften Security Strategy

Russian federal power

President Medvedev yesterday postponed the adoption of the new Russian National Security Strategy with one month. That might indicate that the strategy position on the USA and western partners gets more conciliatory.

The Kremlin officially reasoned the postponement with “technical” issues. However analysts rather explain the postponement with an intention to adjust the document with the new more cooperation-oriented approach of the new US administration.

The postponement came as a surprise. Sources in the Security Council even yesterday morning told newspaper Kommersant that the strategy would be approve on that day.

Security Council Secretary Patrushev in a press conference said that a number of corrections will be made in the document. Several proposals on document improvements were discussed in the Security Council meeting with the President, Kommersant reports.

As BarentsObserver reported, the new strategy includes both domestic and foreign policy objectives. It is also expected to include a high focus on the Arctic.

In his speech to the Security Council yesterday, Dmitry Medvedev highlighted that Russia has changed radically from the 1990s and that the country today develops confidently and with stablility. -Russia has reached a qualitatively new, long-term strategic development path, he underlined, Kremlin.ru reports.
