Regional authorities in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug have rejected a newly elaborated development strategy for the region. The administration argues that the document focuses too much on oil production, and that it downplays the region’s potential within industrial processing, tourism, transport infrastructure and agriculture.

The strategy draft elaborated by the Sankt Petersburg-based Centre of Strategic Studies was intended to outline the future of the region seen in a geopolitical, economic, climate and historical context. However, regional authorities is not content with the draft strategy from the planners, the Nenets AO administration informs in a press release.

-The strategy planners have taken into account only the raw material aspect, and cut the future prospects within agriculture, hydrocarbon processing, infrastructure development, tourism and other sectors, the administration says.

Deputy Governor Yevgenii Alekseev underlines that the region in involved in shipping of coal, diesel fuel and forest products worth almost a billion rouble and that the regional potential for oil processing is significant. He maintains that the future of the region is more differentiated than only oil production.

The Nenets AO administration has sent the strategy draft back to the planners in Sankt Petersburg.
