The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) states that wells drilled in the Barents Sea area will provide more information that may lead to the opening of new exploration areas.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has announced the 20th licensing round. The Government will include 79 blocks/parts of blocks in this round. 51 of blocks are in the Norwegian Sea and 28 in the Barents Sea.

- It is important to continue the development of our welfare society by maintaining opportunities to make new discoveries, activities and value creation on the Norwegian continental shelf. The announcement is a balanced solution with emphasis on environmental- and fisheries concerns, says the newly appointed Minister of petroleum and energy Terje Riis-Johansen, according to the Government’s web-site.

-The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate is concerned with sequential exploration. This means that new blocks are awarded on the basis of knowledge gained from already awarded areas. Work commitments still remain in previously awarded blocks in the Barents Sea, and these may provide important information, says Sissel Eriksen, NPD’s Director Exploration.

You can find all the details about the blocks at NPD’s web-site.
