Igor Orlov enters Presidium of State Council

With the appointment the Arkhangelsk Governor becomes one of the most influential advisors to President Putin.

On the same day as Igor Orlov visited the news-desk of BarentsObserver (photo), at the office of the Norwegian Barents Secretariat last Saturday, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin wrote his name on the list as appointed member in the Presidium of the State Council.

Orlov visited Kirkenes, northern Norway, in connection with the 70th anniversary of the Red Army’s liberation of Finnmark.

The Presidium’s task is to prepare cases for the State Council Sessions, an advisory body to President Putin. The council deals with issues of the highest importance for the Russian Federation. In its capacity as an advisory body, the State Council aids Predisdent Putin in discharging his duties to ensure the concerted functioning and interaction of various governmental bodies.

Igor Orlov represents the Northwestern Federal District and joins the Presidium together with representatives from Russia’s six other Federal Districts, the press office of the Governor informs. 

Regularly, the State Council holds join sessions with the Security Council.

Igor Orlov is for the 2-years period 2013-15 also Chairman of the Barents Regional Council consisting of the heads of all 11 member regions in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region in Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Igor Orlov has been Governor of Arkhangelsk since January 2012. He is born in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine and has been working in Arkhangelsk and Severodovinsk from after graduating in 1987.
