Border station upgrade to put end to queues

The Torfyanovka-Vaalimaa border pass

The major upgrade of the Torfyanovka station on the Russian-Finnish border could put an end to cross-border queues in the area.

Location

The reconstruction of the border point has been going on since 2008 and includes the opening of two more lanes for cars and trucks, better asphalt standards and the establishment of service facilities for drivers and passengers.

According to Rossiiskaya Gazeta, the cross-border point now offers 400 parking spaces, a total of four lanes and high-quality road standards. That will help end the mounting cross-border traffic problems in the areas, people engaged in the project say.

Over the last years, the Torfyanovka station has been a major problems point in cross-border traffic between Russia and Finland. In periods of the years, many kilometers of truck lines were generated on both sides of the border. The record was set in 2006 when a 40 km long queue of trucks lined up waiting for border-crossing.

In 2008, a total of 580,000 of trucks passed the border station, Wikipedia informs. Torfyanovka links the Russian M10 highway with Finland and the Finnish station of Vaalimaa.
