Salla border crossers broke record

Salla Border Station

Person number 100.000 in 2010 crossed the Salla border station on the Finnish-Russian border this week, breaking a new barrier for the border station.

Location

The Salla border crossing is on the border between finnish Lapland and Murmansk Oblast. It was the Knyazev family from Murmansk who became number 100.000 border crosser and thus making history. Salla border crossing became international in 2002. Since then there has been a constant growth in the number of persons crossing the border here. In 2003 55.000 persons travelled over Salla, and the number has increased by 10.000 persons every year. About 47 percent of the travelers are Russians. The head of the border station believes that many of the Russians using the Salla road are visiting the northern Finland towns and ski resorts, according to Finnish TV-channel YLE
