Ferrochrome production in Northern Finland to double

Ferrochrome melter at the Outokumpu plant.

Outokumpu will spend €440 million at its Tornio plant to increase the production to 530,000 tonnes annually.

Location

The mining and metallurgical company says in a press-release the increased capacity at the Tornio plant was originally decided back in 2008, but put on hold due to the financial crisis.

The expanded capacity is estimated to be operational during the first half of 2013, and will add about 120 permanent jobs.

In April 2009, Outokumpu laid-off near 2,000 employees due to low order load at the Tornio plant, including the Ferrochrome works, but also at the other part of the plant and at the Kemi mine, also in Northern Finland.

The Finnish city of Tornio is located close to the border to Sweden in the southern part of the Barents Region. Today, the Swedish – Finnish border area experiences a steady growth.
