Nuclear sites in Kola Peninsula are all safe, says Governor

Problems like the ones in Fukushima are not possible in Murmansk Oblast, Governor Dmitry Dmitriyenko maintains.

All nuclear objects in the Kola Peninsula have an efficient security system, Governor Dmitriyenko said after a meeting with representatives of authorities managing regional nuclear objects.

-Russian standards on radiation protection are far stricter than in other countries, Dmitriyenko underlines in a press release. –Problems similar to the ones in the Fukushima power plant were resolved already in the development phase of our domestic NPPs, he adds.

Dmitriyenko still confirms that a new round of special inspection of the regional nuclear objects will be made in the near future.

Murmansk Oblast is among the Russian regions with the highest number of nuclear objects. In addition to the Kola Nuclear Power Plant, the region has a number of nuclear powered submarines based on its territory, as well as a fleet of nuclear powered icebreakers, significant arsenals of tactical nukes and several dump sites for nuclear waste.
