Norwegian-Russian cooperation on environmental issues can show to a concrete result in the Arkhangelsk region – the opening of a station for collecting of mercurial waste in the town of Karpogory.

Location

The Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency has cooperated with regional authorities in Arkhangelsk on establishing a station for collecting of mercurial waste in the town of Karpogory.

Reduction of mercury pollution is one of the priorities in the Norwegian-Russian environmental cooperation in the north, the Climate and Pollution Agency writes on its web site. The regional authorities in Arkhangelsk in 2007 took the initiative to a project to reduce this kind of pollution in the region.

As part of the project the Russian partners have organized an information campaign for schools, colleges and kindergartens. Pollution from the dangerous metal has for many years been a serious problem in Arkhangelsk Oblast.

The station for collecting of mercurial waste in Kargopory is financially supported by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment, the Arkhangelsk Oblast Administration and the Norwegian Barents Secretariat.
