Putin hails Northern Fleet

Vladimir Putin visits Severomorsk in connection with the Russian Navy Day.

The power and greatness of our Navy will multiply, Russian President Vladimir Putin underlined as captains of the country’s most lethal vessels greeted their head commander and fighter jets covered the Murmansk sky.

”The Fleet’s defence capacities will increase along with its combat readiness and mobility”, Putin highlighted during his visit to Severomorsk, the Northern Fleet headquarters, on Sunday. He added that a total of 60 new vessels currently are under construction. In 2013, the Navy flag was raised on six new vessels, among them the two strategic Borey-class subs Yuri Dolgorukii and Aleksandr Nevsky. Putin also stressed the importance of Navy infrastructure development, a transcript from Kremlin.ru reads. 

The president visited the northern Navy headquarters in connection with the Russian Navy Day. Also Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu, Fleet Commander Vladimir Korolev and a number of other top military representatives attended the event.

Among the vessels, which were assembled in Severomorsk in connection with the visit where the country’s first 4th generation submarine, the “Yuri Dolgorukii”, as well as the “Admiral Kuznetsov” aircraft carrier, the Northern Fleet flag carrier “Petr Veliky”, and a number of other ships. Putin was greeted also by the Northern Fleet’s aviation which showed force with Mig-29 fighters.

During the visit, Putin also attended a video conference in which Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin reported from Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, where Navy yard Sevmash laid the keel of three new nuclear submarines, the ”Krasnoyarsk”, ”Knyaz Oleg” and ”Khabarovsk”. The ”Knyaz Oleg” will be the country’s fifth Borey-class vessel, while the ”Khabarovsk” and ”Krasnoyarsk” will be the fourth and fifth multi-purpose attack sub of the Yasen-class (Graney).

As previously reported by BarentsObserver, a total of 10 new nuclear subs are now under construction in Russia. Among them are the “Kazan” and “Novosibirsk” of the Yasen class and the “Vladimir Monomakh” and “Knyz Vladimir” of the Borei class. In addition, Sevmash is likely constructing two nuclear submarines for special purpose missions, either from scratch or in cooperation with the Admiralty yard in St. Petersburg. One of them are the coming sister vessel to the deep-diving titanium hull submarine “Losharik” used to sea floor studies.
