Norway is modernizing its border guard service. This week construction of the country’s second new border guard station on the border to Russia began.

Location

The Norwegian Border Guard Service is in the process of investing in a more effective system for surveillance and control of the border. The six existing border stations along the 196 kilometers long border to Russia will be replaced by two larger stations.

The first new station was opened in Svanvik in June 2014. It replaced three old stations along the southern part of the border.

Earlier this week the foundation stone for the second border guard station was laid down in Jarfjord, not far from the border-crossing point at Storskog.

The new station, which will be responsible for control over the northern part of the border, will have 92 soldiers and 17 officers. The station, which has a NOK 121 million (€14.2 million) price tag is planned to be ready by the first half of 2016. The building will be almost identical with the new station in Pasvik.

The reorganization of the Border Guard Service and construction of the two new stations was approved by the Norwegian Parliament Stortinget in June 2011.
