S-400 on display in Murmansk

New generation weapon system S-400 was incorporated in the Northern Fleet in 2015.

Russia’s new anti-aircraft weapon system will be rolled around in downtown Murmansk during this year’s 9th May parade.

Location

The advanced missile system, which was included in the arsenal of the Northern Fleet in 2015, will for the first time be shown to the local public during the upcoming May celebrations.

The S-400 Triumph is based on the S-300 missile. It uses three different missiles, each with different capabilities, to cover a wide scope of performances.

With the missile, military units in Murmansk Oblast can hit targets over major parts of the Barents Region, including northern Norway, Finland and Sweden. The missile can hit a ballistic target at 230 km range and a strategic plane at 570 km. 

As previously reported, Murmansk Oblast today has six bases of the Russian Missile Forces, located in Polyarny, Kola, Murmansk, Mochegorsk, Olenegorsk and Polyarnye Zori.

About 40 units of military hardware will be part of the Murmansk parade. Also the BTR-82AM combat vehicle, the Ural-4320 army trucks, 2B-16 towed artillery pieces and 100 mm MT-12 Rapir anti-tank canons will be on display, RIA Novosti reports.

A military parade will be held also in Severmorsk, the Northern Fleet headquarter town. According to the Fleet press service, Russia’s newest nuclear submarines the “Vladimir Monomakh” and the “Severodvinsk”, as well as the diesel-powered “Kaluga” will take part in the show along with the destroyer “Admiral Ushakov” and large anti-submarine ship “Admiral Levchenko” and missile boats “Aisberg”, ” Brest” and mine sweeper “Yadrin”. A number of aircrafts will be flying low over the city, among them An-26, An-12, Il-38, Il-20 and Tu-142 aircrafts. Also Mi-8 and Ka-27 helicopters will take part, the Northern Fleet informs

On 10th of May, celebrations will be held in Dolina Slavy, the memorial site for the fierce 2WW fighting along the Zapadnaya Litsa River. According to TV21, this year’s celebrations at the site will include also an exhibition devoted to the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. A previously reported by BarentsObserver, elite units from the Northern Fleet are likely to have been involved in combat in the Donbass conflict zone.
