The new Borey-class nuclear submarines will be based on the Barents Sea coast only as long as new base facilities in the Pacific Fleet are under development, the Russian Ministry of Defence confirms.

Location

Russia’s two new Borey-class subs, the “Yury Dolgoryky” and the “Aleksandr Nevsky”, will be based in the Northern Fleet only temporary, Deputy Minister Aleksandr Sukhorukov told RIA Novosti.

The two submarines are the first of a total of eight of Russia’s fourth generation of strategic subs, the Borey-class. Both vessels are currently undergoing tests in the Russian High North. They are built at the Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast.

“I can say without doubt: the first two vessels will first be based in the Northern Fleet and then, when the infrastructure is ready, transferred to the Pacific Fleet”, Sukhorukov said.
