An exhibition of Norway’s much acclaimed new series of bank notes will for the first time be shown abroad – in Murmansk.

Location

During the culture festival “Barents Bird”, which takes place in three different towns of the Kola Peninsula April 10-19, the Museum of Local History in Murmansk will be showing the exhibition “Norway’s New Banknote Series: The Sea”. This exhibition has earlier only been shown on the central bank of Norway’s premises in Oslo.

In spring 2014, a competition was held for the design of motifs for the new banknote series. The purpose of the competition was to arrive at a proposal that can be the artistic basis of the new banknote series and communicate the theme “The Sea” in an appropriate manner. Eight participants were selected by a group of experts to take part in the final round of the competition.

Norges Bank decided to go further in developing new bank notes based on two of the proposals submitted to the competition. The graphic designers The Metric System’s design will be on the front of the new notes, while architecture and design firm Snøhetta’s design will be on the back sides.

All the eight contributions in the final round will be shown at the exhibition in Murmansk.

The new bank notes, which will be put into circulation in 2017, are nominated to Designs of the Year 2015.
