Platon Lebedev – soon a free man

The former associate of Yukos-leader Mikhail Khodorkovsky will be released from the prison colony in Velsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, in July, a regional court decided.

Lebedev, who managed the closely Yukos-associated Menatep Bank, will be able to leave Arkhangelsk Oblast as a free man in July, the Velsk regional court decided this Thursday.

However, the prosecutors have not yet decided whether or not to appeal the verdict, Newsru.com reports.

As previously reported, the Velsk regional court also in August this year reduced the prison term of Lebedev after an appeal from his lawyers. However, then the verdict was opposed by the prosecutors, resulting in another appeal case.

If the latest verdict is not disputed by the prosecutors, Platon Lebedev’s prison term will be reduced to a total of 10 years.

Lebedev was detained in 2002 and in two court verdicts got a total of 13 years behind bars. The last year, he has been in a prison in Velsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast

The lawyers of Mikhail Khodorkovsky have not yet appealed for their client’s early release. Khodorkovsky is currently in a prison in Segezha in the Republic of Karelia.
