Podcast: A barren Barents?

The Barents Region may as well be a wasteland to young journalists.

Career-wise, many see it as a dead end.

The North doesn’t offer many job opportunities beyond hyper-local papers and radio stations.

Journalism students living in northern Finland, for instance, are often encouraged to go south and find work in the capital, Helsinki, or stay in large cities like Oulu.

Arne Egil Tønset , who spent four years in Moscow as a foreign correspondent for Norwegian public radio, started his career in the North. He suggests young journalists should consider the North a platform for international news.

Some young journalists are optimistic. They say it’s time to break away from traditional media and find opportunities for new projects in the North. With its culture and natural resources, they see the Barents region as a promising place to explore new media.
