Rovaniemi has lost the position as the town with the world’s northernmost McDonald’s. Big Mac is now for sale in Murmansk. Soon, Arkhangelsk will follow.
The doors to McDonald’s restaurant on the corner of Volna shopping mall downtown Murmansk opened on Friday. While people are queuing up for American fast food, the restaurant chain has plans to expand further in this, the world’s largest city above the Arctic Circle.
Several locations in Murmansk are now under consideration by city authorities and McDonald’s. The fast food chain wants to build a combined restaurant and drive-through near Kolski Prospekt 101, the main entrance road to Murmansk from the south.
McDonald’s already have 330 restaurants in Russia and next cities in line in the Barents Region are Petrozavodsk, Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk.
