Leader of the NBI’s crime department Arto Tuomela told YLE that Swedish gangs are currently making contacts in Finland. In Sweden, gangs have a much larger footprint and are a much bigger threat to public safety, Yle reports. Director of the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, Kauko Aromaa, told Yle that organized crime is still not as common in Finland as it is elsewhere in Europe. But he adds that the government could do more to impede the inevitable spread of mafias, by enacting legislation to target gangs’ earning potential.
