NATO resumes meetings with Russia

NATO Foreign Ministers reached an agreement at today’s meeting in Brussels to formally resume the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) meetings, including at Ministerial level, as soon as possible.

Location

The defence cooperation between NATO and Russia has been frozen since the Georgian – Russian crises started in August last year.

In response to last year’s NATO decision to halt the cooperation with Russia, the Russian Ministry of Defence in late August informed the Norwegian Ministry of Defence that all planned military cooperation between Norway and Russia was suspended, as reported by BarentsObserver.

Today the Foreign Ministers of all NATO states agreed to use the NRC as a forum for dialogue with Russia on all issues – where they agree and disagree – with a view towards resolving problems and building practical co-operation, NATO writes in a news-report.

Russia responded positively to the decision from the NATO meeting in Brussels.  - This decision is a step in the right direction, and we note with satisfaction that common sense has prevailed at NATO, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Igor Lyakin-Frolov told RIA Novosti.
