Among the measure is a ten percent cut in the number of state employees in the region, Murmansk Governor Yuri Yevdokimov said in a meeting with his government ministers today.

The anti-crisis plan, which is to be presented to the public “one of the next days” will strengthen the regional administration’s monitoring and control of the social and economic situation in the region.

The plan will include enhanced day-to-day monitoring of regional production figures, budget revenues, retail trade, salaries and employment, a press release from the governor’s office reads.

Among the measures to be taken is increased support to small and medium-sized companies and enhanced interaction with the banking sector.

The governor now also calls on the municipal administrations in the region to have a more “responsible approach to budget spending”. –We have to consolidate efforts on all level of power in order to counter the possible consequences of the crisis, he said, adding that “the northerners must know that we are not inactive, we will keep on working, and do all we can to go strengthened through this situation”

As previously reported by BarentsObserver, the financial crisis has already materialized in regional investment draught in regional company majors like Norilsk Nickel. The heavily industrialized and export-oriented Murmansk Oblast is highly dependent of raw material prices.

As raw material prices plummet, the credit market dries up and falling demands, Murmansk will inevitably face increased unemployment and stagnating economy.
