Gas plant must follow emission limits

The Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) turns down StatoilHydro request to continue the extraordinary emission of the climate gas CO2 from its liquid natural gas plant at Melkøya in Finnmark.

Location

Melkøya is the onshore plant near Hammerfest which is handling the natural gas from the first operating offshore gas field in the Barents Sea, the Snow White field.

The start-up period for the plant has so far been a long line of technical challenges and trouble. As a result, the emission of carbon dioxide has been far much more than originally planed.

The company has had permission to exceed carbon emissions limits for a 10-month period following the start-up of Melkøya in August 2007, writes Aftenposten.

The current extraordinary emission will have to end by August 21 this year, accorning to a news release published by the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority.

Environmentalists are satisfied with the pollution authorities decision. – It comes late, but it’s a good decision when its finally here, says Frederic Hauge in the Bellona foundation.
