The cleanest and the dirtiest Russian regions

While Murmansk Oblast is the 10th cleanest region in Russia, the Komi Republic is the 9th most polluted, a new environmental study of Russian regions indicates.

Location

According to the rating from the Green Patrol organisation, there are a total of 14 Russian regions with an environmental “unfavourable situation”. Worst off is the Chelyabinsk, Kemerovo and Sverdlovsk Oblasts. The Komi Republic and Leningrad Oblast are rated lowest among the Northwest Russian subjects with a respective 67th and 68th position (the 8th and 9th worst).

Arkhangelsk Oblast is rated as number 38 while the Republic of Karelia is number 33. The Nenets Autonomous Okrug is one of nine regions not included in the study,

The rating, reportedly the first of its kind in Russia, lists the regions in accordance with 15 criteria. Three main three categories are applied – nature protection index, social-ecological index and industrial-ecological index.

All information in the rating is based on open and available sources, spokesman for Green Patrol, Vaycheslav Fyodorov says to RIA Novosti. He adds that the rating is being updated on a daily basis

A total of 75 regions are included in the rating.
