Finland heightens focus on Arctic

The Finnish government has established an official group which is to support, follow up and coordinate Finnish activities in the Arctic.

Location

The group is to inform the government about issues and developments in the Arctic region and nurse contacts with corresponding authorities in other countries, a press release from the Finnish Foreign Ministry informs.

A report on Finnish policies in the Arctic will be elaborated by the group and submitted to parliament before summer.

The group will be chaired by Risto Volanen, State Secretary and assistant to the Prime Minister, while Mr. Hannu Halinen, Ambassador on Arctic Issues from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, will be the group’s General Secretary. Also representatives of other relevant government bodies and interest group, as well as several experts, are included in the group.

As BarentsObserver has reported, Finland last year adopted an Arctic Strategy.
