- Once the additional research is done, and consultations with circumpolar nations are held, Russia will lodge its application with the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, said Arthur Chilinarov this Sunday, reports Itar-Tass.
Chilingarov is Presidential Special Envoy for International Cooperation on Arctic issues.
The research work has the aim to find new evidence to support Russia’s territorial claim in the Arctic that could expand the sovereignty over an additional 1,2 million square kilometres in the area.

The research vessel “Akademik Fyodorov” will be assisted by a nuclear powered icebreaker.
This summer, the vessel was studying the Lomonosov and Mendeleev Ridges. A total of 67 expertsparticipated on the 100 day expedition.
