The village of Inari in Finnish Lapland - centre of the Sami people – will get a new “sky-line” as the new 4,800 square metre building is taking shape.
The purpose of the Sami cultural centre is to create better possibilities for the Sami in Finland to preserve and develop their own language, culture and business activities as well as to manage and develop their cultural self-government and to support the development of their general living conditions.
The stylish building is stretching out in four directions. The main surface materials are wood and glass, although the construction frame is made of concrete.
The centre will cost some €12 million of which EU’s regional development fund has granted €5 million.
In addition to the Sami Parliament, the centre will contain Sami administration for culture, education and know-how. Meeting rooms, conference hall and cinema will also find its place inside the building.
The centre will open in 2012.
