Zapolyarny mine at full capacity

Underground nickel mining.

The new underground mine ”North deep” has reached its planned production of 500,000 tons of ore per month.

Location

The development of the mine started some few years back and will replace the ore-extraction from the open-pit mines in the town of Zapolyarny near the Norwegian border on Russia’s Kola Peninsula.

The nickel-mines in the area are operated by Kola GMK, a subsidiary of Norilsk-Nickel. The total production of ore from the company’s mines in the Pechenga area reached 7,9 million tons in 2009, and six million tons of this ore comes from the new “North deep”, according to a press-release from Norilsk-Nickel.

The development of “North deep” is the largest industrial project on the Kola Peninsula in post-Soviet period with an estimated cost of near 15 billion rubles (€ 400 million).
