27 mayors from northern Norway has signed a petition to the Norwegian minister of Environment, protesting against continued existence of Kola nuclear power plant in Murmansk oblast.

Location

The four reactors of Kola nuclear power plant have a recommended lifetime of 30 years. The two oldest reactors were operational in 1973 and have been given license to continue production until 2018. Next year the plant administration will apply for another 10 years continuation of production at Kola NPP.

- Out of respect for people, nature and the environment, Kola Nuclear Power plant should be shut down as soon as possible. All four reactors are constructed for 30 years of production and now the power plant would like the reactors to be active for 25 years more than what is recommended, says Stine Østnor in Norwegian environment organization Natur og Ungdom to NRK.

The current Norwegian government wrote in their establishing declaration in 2005 that they want to increase the efforts to stop further production at the Kola plant. The Mayor’s protest was handed over to the Norwegian minister of Environment, Eirik Solheim this week. Østnor says that it is about time that the Norwegian Government start to act according to their previously declared goals.
