No Snohvit technology for Shtokman

The Shtokman Development AG has decided not to use the LNG technology applied in StatoilHydro’s Snøhvit project, company representative Herve Madeo confirmed this week.

Location

-We will go for another LNG concept, with 100-percent tested technology, Mr. Madeo told newspaper Nordlys during this week’s Arctic Frontier conference in Tromsø, Norway.

The company representative said that the Shtokman Development AG has chosen “a completely different technology”, which is applied in 70 percent of the LNG plants around the world. –We are not at all going to invent the wheel again, Mr. Madeo underlined.

The Shtokman project will include one of the world’s biggest LNG plants ever built, and the Shtokman Development AG will work hard to avoid the technical problems experienced by StatoilHydro in the Snøhvit project.

The Shtokman LNG plant will be based in Teriberka, 120 km northeast of Murmansk city. The plant will be connected with a 550 km long pipeline to the field.

Partner in the Shtokman project, StatoilHydro, in 2007 opened its Melkøya LNG plant near Hammerfest on the Barents Sea coast. The plant, unique in its kind, and the northernmost LNG installation ever built, has since experienced serious technical problems.
