Russian vehicles might in the near future have to pay up to 2200 EUR per year for using Finnish roads. Finnish government officials say the measure is meant to alleviate problems with heavy traffic and backlogs on main roads in south-eastern Finland.

The truck fee must however also be seen as a response to Russia’s export tariff increase on round timber, a measure which has put the powerful Finnish pulp industry in lack of raw timber. According to the government’s proposal, the road user fee will be 800-2200 EUR a year per truck, or 11 EUR a day. The fee would bring in an estimated 5-15 million EUR a year, Yle reports.
