Russia calls for unified fishery regulations

Russian fishery boss Andrey Krainy says there is a need for more harmonized fishery regulations with Norway in the waters around Spitsbergen.

-We have to think about the unification of rules – create common Russian-Norwegian rules on fishing in the Spitsbergen area, Mr. Krainy said to radio channel Russian News Service. -The thing is that the Russian vessels [fishing in the area] are forced to operate along Norwegian rules, he said. -We have sent fishery protection vessels to the area in order to make sure that our fishermen observe our rules, he adds. The leader of the Russian Fishery Agency also said that the issue will be on the agenda in the upcoming session in the Joint Russian-Norwegian Fishery Commission, the Russian News Service writes.
