According to the new demands, which will be effectuated by January 1st 2010, all fish sold within the EU must have a certificate showing the fish origin. A law like this is supposed to stop the import of all illegally caught fish to the EU.
This will bring forward new challenges for the fish industry. The main problem is how to trace fish which has been divided and mixed with other substances, says Norwegian researcher Kine Mari Karlsen in Nofima Market. Karlsen is part of a Norwegian project which is working with the challenges connected with the new EU demand.
