Regional politicians might say no to more oil

Platform for the "Goliat" (ENI Norway)

Politicians in northern Norway have become increasingly sceptical towards the oil industry after the ENI company decided to drop the construction of land-based facilities in connection with the “Goliat” oil field.

Mr. Arvid Jensen, head of the Petro Arctic Association, an organisation representing the interests of regional oil and gas supply companies, says the politicians’ absolute demand for landing of the hydrocarbons might result in years of standstill on the Norwegian northern shelf. -To postpone production and wait for the landing of the resources is a dangerous sport, Mr. Jensen says. –It took twenty years from the discovery of the Snohvit field to the beginning of field development, he adds. The petroleum analyst fears that the staunch position of the regional politicians now might scare away the investors. The ENI company, the operator of the Goliat field in the area, has proposed to let companies in the region build the field production platform as a compromise for not landing the oil. Mr. Jensen believes such a construction project will help secure 500 new jobs for several years.
