Finland approves Nord Stream

The Nord Stream pipeline

The Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland issued a permit on Friday to Nord Stream for construction of the gas pipeline inside Finland’s economic zone.

Location

Nord Stream is the pipeline supposed to bring natural gas from Russia’s Siberia fields, and later on also from the Barents Sea Shtokman field to the European markets. The pipeline will cross the Baltic Sea from the Vyborg region to Greifswald in Germany.

The pipeline will cross 375 kilometers of Finland’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The permit issued on Friday sets a number of conditions before undersea construction can begin YLE News reports.

The permit bans the anchoring of ships laying pipeline, as they may stir up sediments that could release harmful substances. An annual fee has also been imposed to be used to prevent damage to fishing. The permit also requires arrangements to monitor the environmental impact of the pipeline.
