The ethnic clashed and the following massive street fights in the small Karelian town in early September 2006 attracted major attention both inside and outside Russia. The Kondopoga case was seen as sign of growing tensions between local Russians and Caucasians in the country.
It all started with the brutal murder of two locals in a restaurant fight with people of Caucasian origin. A few days later, local Russians wanted to revenge the murders and massive street disorder started, as earlier reported by BarentsObserver.
The Karelian Supreme Court says a verdict in the case against the defendants, all six from the Caucasian republics of Chechnya and Dagestan, will be announced on March 29th, reports Radio Free Europe.
