Work starts on 3rd Graney class sub

Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk will start construction on yet another nuclear powered multi-purpose submarine this year.

Location

The two first submarines of the class, named Severodvinsk and Kazan, are entering its final stage of construction. Severodvinsk is currently undergoing harbour trails and is expected to sail into the White Sea for its final sea trails as the ice goes in late May.

The name of the third submarine of the class is not yet announced.

The vessels of the Graney class will be the most heavily armed multi-purpose submarine sailing in northern waters. Its armament includes 24 long-range cruise missiles, eight torpedoes in addition to mines and anti-ship missiles.

In total, the Russian navy will get at least six Graney class submarines, reports RIA Novosti.
