The German open-air theatre Titanick marked the opening with the hour-long performance “Furnace Symphony” – a frenetic blend of rhythm, fire and machinery.
The opening concert was a fantastic combination of Russian, Norwegian and Finnish folk music and traditional sports and dance. The Russian balalaika’s Jimi Hendrix, Aleksey Arkhipovskiy, performed together with tough Russian fist-fighters, the Norwegian fiddler Ragnhild Furebotten played together with 6 brass players and Norwegian ”halling”-dancers, while the Finnishtechno accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen ruled the stage together with wrestlers from Finland, Norway and Russia.
Barents Spektakel 2011 is the eight spektakel festival since the first in 2003. The festival has developed as a cultural-political cocktail with contemporary art, performances, literature, theatre, film, seminars and concerts as ingredients, spiced with the current issues related to the Barents Region and the High North in general.
