Nuclear cruiser to make port call in Syria

"Pyotr Veliky" (mil.ru)

The Russian Northern fleet’s Pyotr Veliky has entered the Mediterranean Sea and will visit the Syrian port of Tartus.

Location

BarentsObserver reported last week the nuclear powered missile cruiser is on its way to participate in a large scale Navy drill in the Indian Ocean. The cruiser will sail from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal.

In 2008, Russia was reported to be in talks with Syria about establishing a permanent base for Russian warships in Tartus, RIA Novosti reports. Last year, the Northern fleet’s only operating aircraft-carrier Admiral Kuznetsov made a visit to Tartus together with other surface vessels from the Kola Peninsula, as BarentsObserver reported.
