Finland locates new reactor in Pyhäjoki

The nuclear power plant will be constructed in Pyhäjoki in Lapland.

Second new nuclear power plant in the Barents Region announced this week.

Location

The location of Finland’s third nuclear power plant was announced by Fennovoima, the company behind the project, on Wednesday, reports YLE News.

The location at Pyhäjoki, south of Oulu, means that the Barents Region will get its second nuclear power plant. Kola nuclear power plant in Russia started its first reactors in the 1970ties.

Fennovoima’s announcement comes the same day as head of Rosatom, Sergey Kiryenko confirmed that the construction of the second nuclear power plant near the town of Polyarny Zori on the Kola Peninsula will start in 2015. The new Russian nuclear power plant could also be operational by 2020 as reported by BarentsObserver.

Like in northern Russia, Finnish green groups are also protesting the construction of the new nuclear power plant in Pyhäjoki.

- Nuclear power in general is a poor solution - the risks have already been seen. It is worrisome that the Finnish energy system is being set to go in a completely different direction from that in many other European countries, says Tapio Laakso, programme director at Greenpeace, interviewed by Helsingin Sanomat.
